Curtis Junior enlisted in the Navy in November 1940 and attended the U.S. Navy School of Music starting that winter. After graduation, he was assigned to the band of the U.S.S. Arizona. Mr. Haas played the flute, clarinet and saxophone, sang and arranged music. He also served as the band's assistant director.

Mr. Haas was a musician second class when he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. All 21 band members were killed when they hurried to their battle station in the ammunition hold, which exploded when the battleship was bombed.

The heroic story of the USS Arizona band is told in “A Band to Honor” (now streaming).
