Sgt Franklin was from Buffalo, Mo and was drafted in 1965.
After basic and AIT he was assigned to the 2/27th INF regiment Wolfhounds, 25th Division stationed in Vietnam near Cu Chi.
After 3 months with the 2/27th Wolfhounds, he transferred to the 3/4 CAV where he became a member of their LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol)
After 2/3rds of of the LRRP unit was killed in an operation, the unit was disbanded. Bill then volunteered as a door gunner in Huey Helicopters for the 3/4 CAV where he served for 12 months.
